Hudson,
Gavin & Martin Auckland 1000
A
big thank you to all the volunteer officials who helped run the Hudson, Gavin
& Martin Auckland 1000. We had about 70 people involved in various roles.
It was great to see the co-operation from all the clubs.
And
we have had some thanks from the riders, including some who enjoyed the brief
rain!
Next
year’s race is programmed for Sunday 22nd August – put it in your
diaries now.
Junior
World Track Champs
Congratulations
to Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell on their gold medal success at the Junior
World Track Champs in
When
Sam first turned up at the Velodrome a few seasons ago it was obvious he had
the fast twitch fibres and leg speed to make a very good sprinter. He has
realised that potential and provides a role model for other aspiring sprinters.

Subject: Centre Commissaires' course - Reminder
We have been concerned
about the dwindling number of commissaires in
We are looking at running
three sessions at an introductory level to encourage people to become involved
at a starter level. The sessions will be broken into three - track, road
and timekeeping/judging. Hopefully those people who come along for the
track session can help at the Centre Champs which are straight after the first
session. The plan would be to buddy you with an experienced commissaire
to get an introduction to what is going on. We also want to take some of
the "scariness" out of that big fat UCI rule book.
The sessions are scheduled
for :
·
Track
- Sunday 1 February at the Velodrome from 1200
·
Road
- Tuesday 10 February at Dilworth School
·
Judging/Timekeeping
- Thursday 19 February at Dilworth School

Hi all,
Plans for an indoor
velodrome in Auckland are proceeding and it seemed appropriate in the middle of
the track season to update everybody on where they have got to.
Background - This has been ongoing for several
years with Peter Walker leading a small but enthusiastic team. Initially
discussions were held with Waitakere City, but ultimately the two sites
considered were rejected because one did not meet the council's own planning
requirements - it wasn't big enough - and the other had already been promised
to another sport on a long term lease.
Focus then shifted to
Papakura Council which was keen to get involved and provide an area it is
planning to purchase for a number of sports to use.
We are now talking to
Manukau Council, which has informally agreed to put the project on its long
term community facilities planning after several meetings and presentations
with council officials.
At the moment it appears a
future Velodrome would most likely be built within the same park at Manukau as
the existing Velodrome, but not on the same site as we obviously wish to
continue using the current Velodrome, while a new one is being built! The overall
project is for a Regional "Centre of Cycling"
Separate organisation - Cycling Auckland is setting up a
charitable company to oversee the Velodrome project. The charitable company has
been suggested as the best legal entity to drive the project separate from
Cycling Auckland. The project group consists of Peter Walker and Mike Barnes as
the nucleus. Peter is well known to those who have come through school cycling,
while Mike has also been involved at that level and this season is trying track
himself for the first time. Bruce Goldsworthy, Gary Ulmer and Mark McLean have
contributed to the group at various stages and Martin Thomson and myself are
involved to a lesser extent from the current Cycling Auckland executive.
Design - While lobbying of the various
councils has taken place, it has been backed up with concept designs and
budgets for the building. A group of architects, structural engineers and a
project company have been involved. All have donated their time and talent free
of charge on the understanding they will be given the right of first refusal to
build the complex. More detailed planning is now starting to be done i.e. type
of materials to be used, roof design etc. Investigation of the various
different track designs available has not started yet.
Elite Road Nationals
I hope as many as possible
of you plan to head to Te Awamutu to support the Auckland riders at the elite
road nationals. The TTs are on Friday 9 January. The women race on Saturday 10
January and the Elite and U23 men's event is on Sunday 11 January. More details
are on the Bike NZ website. The road course will be familiar to those who have
done the TeA Junior Tours in recent years. All the best to the riders
competing.
Holidays
On behalf of Cycling
Auckland have a safe and enjoyable holiday season and make the most of all this
good bike riding weather.

Revised distances and
start times for the Auck Road Champs over the weekend.
The map of a revised course is posted on North Harbour's website –
www.nhcc.org.nz
The course has been revised to meet traffic management requirements.
North Harbour Club will accept late entries on the day at DOUBLE entry fee up
until 30 minutes before the race start time.
Parking: Please park in Wookey Lane. The Kumeu Hall parking area is for
official vehicles only.
Registration: At Kumeu Hall from 8am both days
While some grades have been combined to start at the same time, separate medals
will still be awarded for each grade.
See you at Kumeu over the weekend.
John Coker.
A meeting is being held on
Sunday 7 September at
Interested riders and families are invited to attend.
Thanks to North Harbour
Club and all its volunteers for organising the event in trying conditions. At
least the day did improve and the kids who rode last had better conditions than
the Masters riders who were first away.
A full set of results has been posted on the North Harbour website – www.nhcc.org.nz
Thank you to all those riders who supported the champs by turning up. It's good
to know there are still some "hard" men and women out there!
The weather conditions at
Parakai, 50 kms north of Auckland for the TT Champs were not as bad as the near
gale force winds in the centre of the city. Auckland is a big place and can
have a wide variety of weather.
Counties Manukau has run races out in the Franklin area this winter when the
weather has not been nearly as bad as in the central city area.
So just because the weather is disgusting where you are, it does not mean it
will be as bad where the bike race is!
Stay safe on your bike

Those new, first or second
season riders interested in riding the track this year should apply for the use
of one of Cycling Auckland's hire bikes at the track muster to be held on
Saturday 11 October, at the Manukau Velodrome. More information closer to the
date, but please diary the day now.
Cycling Auckland wishes to
appoint a third selector for the coming track season. The two selectors already
appointed are Chris Whitley and Mark McLean. Applications should be made to the
centre President, John

If you are planning to go
to Wanganui for the racing over Labour weekend you probably need to start
