Track Racing

Track racing runs from October to March at the Manukau Velodrome, track cycling is a fast paced and exciting form of cycling. North Harbour, in association with Cycling Auckland has a development programme to assist and encourage new Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 riders on the track. It aims to acquaint you with a track bike and then help you acquire the skills you'll need to become a proficient track rider. The Saturday morning sessions will focus on progressive improvement of your track skills, teaching you about using the contours of the track, cat and mouse skills and how to be observant while sprinting by learning how to look behind you when racing at speed. By attending these sessions on a regular basis, riders will be able to put all their hard work into practice by taking part in some competitive exercises with riders of similar ability.

The Manukau Velodrome has been the training ground for many of New Zealand's top cyclists (among them Sarah Ulmer and Julian Dean) and over the years Auckland has consistently produced national champions on the track.

Track bikes differ from road bikes because they have a fixed wheel with only one gear and no brakes. No matter what you're riding, the skills you learn on the track will help develop a good, all round ability for all cycling disciplines. Track bikes are available for hire for a small fee and coaching is provided across all grades.
