The winter rains have finally arrived so time to get that wet weather gear and long gloves out of the draw following a great summer for riding.
It has been a very busy couple of months with Track Nationals, Club Road Nationals, Junior tours (including our own) and BikeNZ R&T age group team selections. More on all of these below.

Time has slipped by and with it the AGM and prize giving. We will be looking to schedule these shortly and will let you know.
We race this weekend (May 30th) then break for June before racing again in July and August. We encourage all members to take part in these races as a core component of what the club is doing for you.

Stage
1
Saturday morning dawned fine and calm despite a dreadful forecast. A fast 6km TT faced all riders to kick the tour off.
The top 3 in the U19 Men were covered by just 2s but it was James Northey who took the points from Mitch O’Sullivan and James Oram. Hamish Jefferies and Hardy Michel had comprehensive wins in the U15 and U17 boys respectively. At the top of the U15 Girls it was a close thing with Samantha Croft heading off Maxyna Cottam. Georgia Williams and Georgina Wilson took out the U19 and U17 Girls respectively.
Stage

Mid day Saturday saw the rain arrive for the first of the road races. A slippery corner and poor visibility brought cancelling the stage close but all riders showed their true determination and continued. Some great racing ensued with the U15 girls riding hard to the bitter end where Alana Lythe took the honours. The course and racing format ensured hard racing through the whole field in the battle for placings. In the U17 Boys Jamie Marr, Auckland Grammar, had to split 2 Sacred Heart riders, Sean Kirby and Greg Potter for 9th and the extra point for him and the school. This story was repeated in the U17 Girls where the 2 Rangitoto riders, Isabella Williams and Lauren Hobson, were split by Waikato Diocesan’s Robin Hacker-Cary for 8th, 9th and 10th.
The rain stopped for the second race groupings Saturday afternoon and most got to ride in the sun. Stage wins went to James Northey, Alex Heaney and Liam Kane in the U19, U17 and U15 Boys respectively. In the Girls it was Georgia Williams, and Racquel Sheath who headed the U19 and U17 races.
Stage
3
A new introduction to the event this year was racing over 2 stages on Sunday for Year 7 & 8 riders. The Points race at North Harbour Stadium was a great introduction to bunch racing for this group as well as many across the other categories.
With a sprint for points every 2 laps the racing was tough for all with dead legs for the final dash for the line the order of the day.
The Year 7/8’s split quickly
with a group
of 6 riders containing Holly White (St Cuthberts), Bryony Botha
(Norcross
Intermediate), Nia Kenny (Diocesan School for Girls), Mikayla Harvey
(Alfriston
College), Liam Ward (St Kentigern College) and

The final road stage at Taupaki
proved the
deciders for all the categories. Road
works caused a late route change meaning a tough hill climb just 1 km
into the
stage. This split many of the races with
all of the U19 women except Madison Oram withdrawing from the stage

In the closest finish of the

and Tour win for the U17 Girls was taken by Georgina Wilson (Diocesan)

As in Stage 2 the race for points throughout each race ensured honest efforts by all. Even the Year 7/8 parent (and brother) support riders were seen puffing as they crossed the finish line with their charges safely in front of them.

Notes
from the
Fees: There will be no changes to licence
costs in 2011. Bike NZ is planning for the whole licensing registration
system
to be done on line.
Trade
team riders: It was
affirmed that all riders, including those in trade teams, must belong
to a club
and centre.
Track
Championships: There were a lot of remits on track racing, which will
result in a
complete overhaul of the national championship programme. Features
approved by
the meeting include the introduction of an Omnium event for U19 Men and
Women;
Masters events to be run over the same distance as at the UCI World
Masters
Champs; the introduction of extra Masters events as suggested by
An under 17 team pursuit will be
introduced and the 500 metre scratch race for boys may well be deleted.
All Omnium will be run to the Olympic
format of six events over two days. The National selectors will also
revise
qualifying times to reflect the higher national standard of competition
– this has not been done this century!
The elite championships will be held
over three days, with the possibility of another grade being used to
bolster the
programme and take the pressure off the age group – masters programme which is likely to be extended to five
days. No final
dates have been set yet as the elite champs will be fitted into the
international programme, but the age group – masters champs will be at a similar time to this year.
Elections: David Osten will join Lynn Murphy and
Bruce Goldsworthy on the National Executive.
